8/17/2024

8/17/2024: What a day!! Our goal was Banff National Park, but the road through Jasper and south (Rte 93, Icefields Parkway) is closed. Yesterday was the first day victims of the fire were allowed back into town but we were told they must be ready to evacuate on an hour's notice. So Ron looked for an alternate route and chose Route 40. Sounds like a highway, right! NOT! It was an unpaved rough, muddy road meant for loggers. Lots of pot holes and slippery mud as we traveled up and down mountainous roads. We went 178km (110 miles) and that took us 4 hours. Finally, we arrived at Route 11, a highway! So we traveled a couple of hours to the entrance of Banff Park where we were told to turn around. 93 south had experienced a mud slide and 93 north was closed because of fires. By this time we were frazzled, so we grabbed a camp site at Two O'clock Campground on Route 11. In the pics, you can see the transition from bad road to highway with great mountain views.

Muck

More rough road and single lane bridge

Are we dirty?

More muck with construction

Entrance to Banff National Park where we were turned back

What a joke! We were on this rough road for 4 hours, no houses, no people, and a handful of cars.
Where are the school kids?
