7/6/14 Peterborough to Young's Point Lock

We decided to attend 8:30 church at the Cathedral and opted for a later departure.  The church was lovely.  The bishop presided over the service because as he stated, “I am here to assist the newly ordained priest who is now in charge of this parish”.  He had an excellent, thoughtful homily.   To our fellow musicians in Dunedin:  It was apparent that this choir did not practice their mass parts.  They only sang every other line of the Gloria and didn’t follow the musical notation at all.  The congregation stopped singing because we were lost.  (We miss Our Lady of Lourdes).

After the service, we returned to the boat and prepared for departure but were told by the marina staff that the Peterborough lift lock was down for repair.  Several other loopers had waited on the blue line all morning for the lock to open.  After a free pump out at the marina, we headed over about 12:30, just as our friends were entering the small lock before the Peterborough Lift Lock.

As we waited on the blue line at the big lift lock, a couple approached and said they were starting the loop soon.  It is always nice to share stories with new loopers.

We finally entered the lift lock with 3 other boats and tied to port.  The boat in front of us got their lines caught as they were ready to exit the lock and Ron had to do some quick maneuvers around them and the boats to our starboard side.  The Ranger tug behind us had guests aboard from Nova Scotia and it was nice to chat during our ride though the first two locks.

The remainder of the day was spent locking through with Luna Sea.

We were both headed to Young’s Point Lock.  Since the lock closed at 6:30, we opened the throttle all the way on the last six miles across the lake.  Our chart plotter said we were going an unheard  of rate of 21 mph. At that rate, we burn 13 gallons of fuel an hour.

We made it to the lock with 10 minutes to spare.  As soon as we were through the lock, we said our goodbyes to Luna Sea, and we pulled onto the upper lock wall between two boats.
