We started a little later than usual. The weather was cool and the sky, clear. We encountered several locks today, but there
was no wait at any of them since the lockmasters called ahead and told the next
lock to prepare. One of the locks we
went through was in Lyons, NY (peppermint capital of the world) where my
grandfather was born. I mentioned his
name (Schlieman) to the lockmaster and he said that he had worked with someone
with the same last name.
When we got to the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, we headed south
toward the Finger Lakes and then headed west toward Seneca Falls. This town is known as the birthplace for
women’s suffrage and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Among the 2015 inductees is Nancy Brinker, who
founded the Susan G Komen for the Cure in honor of her sister. They were both from Peoria, IL.
Seneca Falls is really between the two Finger Lakes. Because we are constrained by time, we will
not be able to enter the Finger Lakes and must, instead, turn around and head
back for Brewerton on the Erie Canal.
We had dinner last night at Parkers in Newark. Tonight we went to the busiest place in town
which turned out to be another Parker’s across from the Visitors' Center.
Both meals were very good.
We are on a free wall again tonight, but this time with no
power. We are grateful that the temps
are cool and we don’t need the air conditioner.
